October 4–14, 2010
"October is the month of painted leaves," wrote Henry David Thoreau with New England in mind. His words also capture the poetry of colors we'll admire on this autumnal quest through Atlantic Canada and coastal Maine. We start out in Newfoundland, with a survey of its scenic palette: St. John's, Cape Spear National Historic Site, and birdthronged Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Next it's on to Louisbourg for a visit the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, where 18th century traditions come to life and where France long battled Great Britain for colonial supremacy in strategic—and theatrically scenic—North America. The enchantment continues in Baddeck and across Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We savor the historic and natural attractions of Prince Edward Island, encompassing Charlottetown's old seaport; Province House, birthplace of the Canadian Confederation; and Prince Edward Island National Park, site of the literature-steeped Anne of Green Gables House. Then, after spending the day in vibrant Halifax, we continue to the United States, calling in Maine's rocky ports, Bar Harbor, where we will explore Acadia National Park; and charming Portland.
